The DNA Fingerprinting services offered by Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology for the last one decade have been restructured to a Regional Facility for DNA Fingerprinting (RFDF) which started functioning in April 2007 in a self-contained laboratory. The facility is managed by a Chief Scientific Officer (Group leader) and a scientist (Case Receiving Officer). A DNA Examiner, a Case Registrant and a Laboratory Technician provide additional laboratory support.
The major activity of RFDF is to provide human DNA Fingerprinting services to judicial, crime investigating and law enforcing agencies. Samples related to maternity/paternity disputes, crime, rape incidences, and cases involving man missing are analysed at RFDF.
Since April, 2007 RFDF expanded its DNA Fingerprinting services to flora and fauna in a case-by-case manner. RAPD, AFLP or microsatellite marker-based studies or testing aiming at genetic diversity analysis, species/population/varietal discrimination and hybrid seed testing are now undertaken at RFDF. CoxI-based molecular identification and DNA bar-coding of fauna especially for species identification in wild life forensics is yet another service offered by RFDF.
