II. SCIENTIST G IN PLANT BIOTECHNOLOGY WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO SPICE GENOMICS (GINGER & PEPPER) AND/OR METABOLIC & MOLECULAR BIOLOGY OF MEDICINAL PLANTS

Scale of Pay:    7 CPC Pay Matrix Level 14 - Rs. 144200-218200

Number of positions:    1 (unreserved)

Age limit:    50 years as on January 1, 2018 (age relaxation will be given for outstanding candidates and as per RGCB rules)

RGCB has played an important role in research on Spice Genomics and Metabolic and Molecular Biology of Medicinal Plants. The institute has a long and established track record in this specialized area of Plant Biotechnology that is critical to the local cash crop economy and the important industry of herbal medicine and Ayurveda.

The applicant should hold a PhD or equivalent degree and must have a demonstrated track record of excellent research productivity as evident from substantial peer-reviewed publications, the ability to perform cutting edge research and history of successful extramural funding and academic service.

Kerala prides itself in being the hub of spice trade in India and maintained this distinction for thousands of years now. History suggests that the ancient Muziris port in Kerala attracted traders from all over the world for spice trade centuries ago. The desire to control the spice trade from Kerala could also be termed as one of the primary reasons for the western colonization in India. Kerala continues to be a major contributor to the international spice trade over the last decade and the volume of spice trade from Kerala stands at a remarkable 500,000 tons prized at nearly $1500 million. RGCB has an established history from 1996 onwards investigating black pepper and ginger. These studies have addressed risk factors involved in the production of spices including biotic stress (attack from natural pathogens), abiotic stress (caused by vagaries of monsoon), post-harvest adulteration of spices, etc. RGCB seeks to advance knowledge in the application of advanced molecular biology and biotechnology tools to understand infection and immunity to various pathogens that limit the yield of ginger and pepper. This line of research is of critical importance to supporting this very important aspect of economic development of the state. RGCB seeks to translate such research to assist breeders to choose crop varieties through marker assisted breeding with increased yield, lesser production costs and greater financial return. RGCB sees future research progress in this area to generate elite, genetically improved ginger and pepper with increased productivity. In this regard the ideal applicant for this senior scientist position will be a person to lead programs that include among other relevant applications, complete genome and transcriptome sequencing of ginger and pepper, identification of resistant genes and their biotechnological application as well as using molecular fingerprinting and bar coding related to infection and immunity studies.

Ayurveda is a more than 5000 years-old traditional system of Indian medicine and continues to serve 70% of India's rural population. Recent research in Ayurveda has been dominated by studies on medicinal plants and the development of herbal drugs, which has a large market growing at 15% per year. However fundamental life science or biotechnology based studies to understand concepts, procedures, and products are still inadequate. RGCB has major research interests in elucidating the underlying biological and molecular mechanisms involved in plants used as ayurvedic therapeutics as well scientifically documenting such plants used in composition of ayurvedic medicines through a "Natural Products Research Platform" that uses the tools of DNA fingerprinting, DNA barcoding, chemical fingerprinting, medicinal chemistry, cell biology, chemoinformatics and metabolomics. We also expect the ideal applicant for this senior scientist position to address these critical issues.

Significant institutional support including start-up funds and modern laboratory space and facilities will be provided. The successful candidate will also have ample opportunities to apply for additional support funds from a number of funding mechanisms administered by various agencies of Government of India and international agencies. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills demonstrated in a team environment are essential. The position will require roughly 70% of time in leading concerned research work and 30% management work.
