The state-of-the-art modular BSL-3 facility of the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (RGCB), located at its Aakkulam campus, is certified for operations by the Review Committee on Genetic Manipulation (RCGM), Kerala State Pollution Control Board (KPCB), and the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBSC). It functions as a central facility providing a safe and secure environment for research on Risk Group-3 pathogens, supporting studies on emerging and re-emerging viral diseases, antiviral and vaccine development, and outbreak preparedness.
The BSL-3 laboratory is equipped with advanced engineering and operational controls, including negative-pressure air handling systems, controlled access mechanisms, research suites, pass-through autoclaves, certified biosafety cabinets, comprehensive PPE provisions, and continuous surveillance. Access to the facility is regulated through IBSC approval, medical clearance, mandatory training, and authorization by the BSL-3 facility in-charge. Facility usage is scheduled through the RGCB BSL-3 portal, enabling coordinated access to shared resources and monitoring of researcher requirements.
