The focus of my lab is the formation of new blood vessels in our body, a process called angiogenesis. All metabolically active tissues in our body have to be within 100 μm of a blood vessel to survive. Endothelial cells line our blood vessels and act as gatekeepers allowing specific cargo to reach the tissue side from the blood. We will explore the role of intracellular trafficking and its cross talk with metabolism in endothelial cells. Angiogenesis requires a switch in endothelial metabolism. Metabolic plasticity is therefore critical for initiating vessel formation and later stabilising and pruning of vessels. Our research hopes to understand this complex biological process and identify new targets to control endothelial function in ischaemic diseases and cancer.
