Inauguration of NTFP unit
Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (RGCB), Thiruvananthapuram under the DST - SHRI program, the Government of India has supported the Astra Tribal Society to establish a unit for the processing and value addition of Non-timber forest products (NTFPs) at Makkimala, Thavinjal Grama panchayat, Wayanad District. The established unit was handed over to the Tribal Society by Prof. Chandrabhas Narayana, Director, RGCB on 17th January 2023. Through this project, RGCB opened up a way for the tribals to improve their quality of life by upgrading their traditional occupation through scientific interventions. 15 tribal families of the region are directly benefitting through this effort.
